GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim is a combination of antibiotics that work in conjunction with each other.

Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim is often used to treat urinary tract, skin, respiratory, or digestive tract infections. It may be used for ear infections, kennel cough, coccidiosis, and pneumonia.

If this drug is given to dogs long term, it may cause hypothyroidism.

HOW IT WORKS:

Sulfamethoxazole is an sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by blocking the production of folic acid, which is essential in making the bacteria’s DNA. Trimethoprim works similarly, by blocking the production of folic acid at a different stage in it’s development.

By combining these two drugs, there is a heightened chance of killing the bacteria without promoting any resistance by the bacteria.

STORAGE INFORMATION:

Store in a tightly sealed container at room temperature.

MISSED DOSE?

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

* Dry eye
* Loss of appetite
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Fever
* Anemia
* Damage to the liver
* Increase in urination
* Increase in water intake
* Swelling of the face
* Bladder stones
 
Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim may react with these drugs:
* Antacids
* Phenylbutazone
* Diuretics
* Aspirin
* Methotrexate
* Anticoagulants
* Cyclopsporine

Sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim is less likely to cause diarrhea in pets than other antibiotics.
