Rifampin

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Rifampin is used to treat many bacterial infections of Rhodococcus, Mycobacteria and Staphylococci, as well as some antifungal activity against histoplasmosis or aspergillosis. It is commonly used in conjunction with another antibiotic or antifungal.

HOW IT WORKS:

Rifampin is very effective at entering abcesses and other tissues including those of the central nervous system and bones. Once it encounters a bacteria, it inhibits protein synthesis by binding to RNA polymerase and preventing RNA transcription.

STORAGE INFORMATION:

Store in a tightly sealed container at room temperature.

MISSED DOSE?

If you miss a dose, give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

SIDE EFFECTS & DRUG REACTIONS

Rifampin may result in these side effects:
* Red/orange urine
* Rash
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Loss of appetite
* Anemia

Rifampin may react with these drugs:
* Anticoagulants
* Barbiturates
* Benzodiazepine
* Corticosteroids
* Chloramphenicol
* Dapsone
* Ketoconazole
* Propranolol
* Quinidine
 
USE CAUTION WHEN ADMINISTERING THIS DRUG TO PREGNANT PETS - Use of Rifampin in pregnant pets has not been extensively researched.
