The Pointer originated in sometime in the Middle Ages in England. Hunters used them to hunt rabbit, birds and other game, they were to freeze and point the animal for the hunter. They were trained to stand and point for a long period of time, due to the fact that it could take several minutes for a hunter to load and reload their rifles at that time. This breed is still one of the most popular bird dogs in use today, and they are considered to excel in both land and water retrieval.

APPEARANCE(S)

The Pointer is a large dog with a medium sized head that have drop ears. They have high tucked abdomens and a barrel chest. The tails are long and skinny and carried high. The eyes are usually brown or amber and the lips hang over the chin just slightly.

COLOR(S)


This breed is most commonly seen in liver and white, lemon and white, black and white or orange and white. It common to see ticking or roaning throughout the coat.

COAT


The coat is short, dense and usually shiny.

This breed is loyal and loving to their families. They enjoy working, swimming and playing, and they need a family that can be as active as they are. They are good with children and other dogs. They do occasionally chase cats and small animals.

THINGS TO CONSIDER


The Pointer does better with some obedience training early in life. They have been known to chase cats and other small animals. They will get into trouble if they are not given a job.

*This is not a good breed for the first time dog owner.
