The Irish Wolfhound is among the oldest of breeds in existence. This breed was first recorded around 300 BC. They were bred and used for hunting wolves, deer, boar, and Irish elk. In modern times this breed has been bred to be more of a companion dog, and less of a hunting dog.

APPEARANCE(S)

Irish Wolfhounds are giant sized dogs. They stand tall and have long straight legs. The head is wide across the forehead, and the muzzled is narrow. They have dark round eyes and drop ears. The tail is long and curved.

COLOR(S)


This breed is most commonly seen in gray, red, fawn, white, black, and bridle.

COAT


The coat is medium in length and thick and wiry in texture.

Irish Wolfhounds are the gentle giants of the large breeds. They are patient and loving to children and other dogs.

THINGS TO CONSIDER


This breed needs to have a secure area to run at least once a day. The Irish Wolfhound does not make a good watchdog, as they are just not aggressive, even to strangers.

IDEAL LIVING SITUATION

This breed will do well in the city or in the country, although an apartment situation would not be ideal.

HELPFUL INFORMATION/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Irish Wolfhounds need to be brushed twice a week, and groomed at least twice a year.
