The Great Pyrenees come from the Pyrenees Mountains in France. These dogs have been used as the primary protectors for flocks of sheep since the early 17th century. In more recent times they have become popular companion dogs.

APPEARANCE(S)

The Great Pyrenees are large dogs with a heavy build. The head is a wedge shape with drop ears. The eyes are almond shaped and dark brown or black. The nose and mouth are black.

COLOR(S)


This breed is most commonly seen in white with brown or tan markings.

COAT


The coat of the Great Pyrenees is very heavy and thick. The outer coat is long and thick, while the undercoat is extremely dense as it provides against the cold weather.

PERSONALITY

ACTIVITY LEVEL


Moderate-This breed is known to be nocturnal, as they are used to being up through the night standing guard. It is quite common to notice the Great Pyrenees sleeping or slow moving during the day, but active in the night.

POSITIVES


The Great Pyrenees are wonderfully loving dogs. They are extremely loyal and affectionate to the family. They are also great with children and generally good with other dogs and cats.

THINGS TO CONSIDER


The Great Pyrenees can be a bit wary of strangers; their number on priority is to protect the family and the surroundings. This breed needs to be groomed very often.

This breed would do well in the country.

FUN FACT(S)

The Great Pyrenees is also known as the Pyrenean mountain dog. They have also been introduced into the Saint Bernard breed, as that breed was dying out due to the large number of fatalities from rescue work.
