The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated in the early 19th century in Maryland. This breed is thought to have been bred from Newfoundland dogs and a duck retriever. The Chesapeake was created to be able to withstand the icy cold waters of the Chesapeake, so they could retrieve hundreds of duck per day for the hunters.

APPEARANCE(S)

The Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are medium sized dogs with large blocky head and drop ears and gold or yellow eyes.

COLOR(S)


This breed is most commonly seen in dark brown, dead grass color or tan.

COAT


The coat of the Chesapeake is short and rough. The coat has natural oils to make it waterproof and of course the most defining feature is the distinctive curls that appear down the back.
