The Belgian Shepherd originated in several different Belgian villages in the late 1800’s. There are actually four types of Belgian Sheppard’s, Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, and Belgian Laekenois. Some groups consider each a stand alone breed, while it is more commonly accepted that they all fit the qualifications to be considered separate types of Belgian Shepherds within the breed. They all share similar characteristics all with different coat types. The Belgian Shepherds were bred and used as superb sheep herders and protectors. In modern times, this breed has become a popular breed for military and police dogs, as they are intensely brave and protective.

APPEARANCE(S)

Belgian Sheppard’s are large bodied dogs with a heavy muscular build. The head wide across the forehead and they have a long narrow muzzle. The ears are erect and triangle and the tail is long and bushy and generally hang with curl. The chest is deep and they have a semi-high tucked abdomen. All of the Belgian Shepherd looks quite similar to a German Shepherd except the Belgian Laekenois. This type is more liken to a large Irish Terrier.

COLOR(S) & COAT


Each type of this breed has different color and coat.

  • Belgian Malinois – Fawn and Mahogany with a short straight coat.
  • Belgian Tervurens – Fawn and Mahogany with a long slightly wavy coat.
  • Belgian Laekenois – Fawn and Mahogany with a short wiry coat.
  • Belgian Shepherd – Black with long flat coats.

Belgian Shepherd Dogs are very loving and loyal to the family. It is not uncommon for them to be more attached to one person in the family. They are extremely brave and make wonderful watch or guard dogs. They are smart and enjoy learning new things, and do enjoy having a job to perform.

THINGS TO CONSIDER


This breed needs to have ample exercise. The Belgian Shepherd can be overprotective, and they need to be groomed.
