The Akita was bred to be a guard dog. The Akita was also used for fighting and hunting. In Japan the Akita breed stands for good health, and is known as the Great Japanese Dog.

APPEARANCE(S)

APPEARNCE
Akita’s are large bodied dogs with a powerful build. The head is triangular with short erect ears. The tails are bushy and curl along the back.

COLOR(S)

The Akita is most commonly white with spots of color.

COAT

Medium to short thick coarse coats.

POSITIVES

Akita’s are very good watchdogs and extremely loyal to owners. They can be quite loving and gentle.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

This breed is known to be dog aggressive, and very territorial. Akita’s do not take to new people very well. Small children and Akita’s are not always a good combination.

IDEAL LIVING SITUATION

This breed will do well in the city or in the country, although an apartment situation would not be ideal.
