HISTORY

The York Chocolate is one of the newest American cat breeds, as it was created in the early 1980’s on a New York dairy farm. The breed was created when a litter of kittens on the farm was fathered by a black longhaired cat and the mother was a longhaired black and white cat. One of the kittens, named Brownie, had brown coloring of a distinctive pattern. Brownie went on to have a litter of kittens the following summer with a black longhaired tom. There were two kittens in the litter: a chocolate male and a white and chocolate female. The dairy farmer noticed the consistency in body and coat type and began her own breeding program, thus giving us the York Chocolate.
